Heads turned up
towards that star,
that shines so bright.

Chitter chatter dies,
as darkness settles
throughout the land.

That star was hidden
ever so briefly behind
a tiny rock.

August 21, 2017 there was a total solar eclipse here in the United States, the first in 38 years. Now writing about the eclipse has me thinking about how ‘special’ the eclipse is. Each sunny day as we walk outside our bodies block the sun for a brief moment, much like the solar eclipse. The difference is the size of the shadow. Anyways I’m glad I got to cherish that sweet moment of totality.

There she lived upon the clouds,
where she fished for the evening stars.

As folks hitched and multiplied,
she kept her head in space.

Time was ticking against her,
upon the clouds she sobbed.

The man on the moon held her up,
when the world brought her down.

There she lives within the clouds,
reaching for her time to shine.

I hold one thumb to earth,
covering it — poof the earth
is gone, just as I did on earth,
with the moon.

Here I stand on an
Estranged uninhabited rock.
Silence never felt so quite;
loneliness now a new high.

There I saw the earth,
in all her beauty.
My life is there but,
I’m 238,900┬ámiles away.

I’ve never traveled so far,
I see a black abyss.
Here I stand wondering
what the world is doing.

Oh what I’d give to hear noise,
To see people, smell food.
Drive through traffic,
Smell the earth’s atmosphere once more.

My time to depart this terrestrial place,
return home.
How lucky am I to be one,
of a few to walk on the moon.

He said it best,
One small step for man
One Giant leap for mankind.

I didn’t just go to the moon,
We as the human race,
We went to the moon,
and haven’t been back since.
